Chair Concept

Front View of the Chair Display
The idea for this year's chair design came to me last year, during the 2007 Chairish Gala. Learning about the people who are helped by the Atlanta Furniture Bank gave me the inspiration for this piece.
The people who are served by the Furniture Bank are often forgotten by our society - we say they have fallen through the cracks: people on the outskirts of our daily life - we do not like to think about their difficulties. We forget them as fast as we can - to continue on with our convenient life. Therefore, the name of the piece is "Forgotten in Time."
The saying on the lower part of the display says "There is a crack in everything - that's how the light gets in" (Leonard Cohen), I selected the saying because it can be it dark as can be, from somewhere you will see a light that gives hope and help to leave the dark place.

Video

A video from the "Forgotten in Time..." installation. The video shows a detailed view of the piece. Enjoy watching it!

Many thanks to Dean Pernaci from dpeditorial (Atlanta, GA) for filming and post production of the movie and the support. This great movie wouldn't be possible without you.
Thanks, Dean and Roxanne.

Design Specifications

Top View of the chair

The design started with selecting a chair from the Furniture Bank warehouse, and looking at the chair (actually a bar stool) and deciding on the size of the installation. The decision to use a stage and walls as the background for the chair is important to the theme: often forgotten items are left in a corner somewhere.
The stage was built using standard carpentry techniques: the floor is covered with vinyl tiles, the walls have bead board and baseboard and quarter rounds for trim. The stage is made to be taken apart for easy transport.
Once the stage was done, I started on the chair. Different approaches were considered; I decided to mount the stained glass elements directly onto the chair. This required bending the wires into a shape that represents the vines of ivy. The leaves are in 2 different sizes and 3 different shapes.
Left Side View Once the ivy display was done I start working on the book. The book is made of 1/4" glass and copper. All pieces are glued together. Once the book was assembled, I etched the words and the pattern into the glass.
The book was then mounted onto the chair. The ivy display and the book have separate light bulbs and circuits. The book light is controled by a photocell that allows the book to serve as a nightlight. The ivy light is the main light and is turned on by a switch on the side of the stage. An access door on the left side of the stage allows easy changing of the ivy light bulbs. The stage is mounted onto wheels to allowed for easy re-location.
